The effect of surfactant on the solubility of kencur rhizome ethanol extract in self-nanoemulsifying drug delivery system

Kencur ( Kaempferia galanga L.) rhizome ethanol extract contains a lipophilic compound of ethyl p-methoxycinnamate. Self-nanoemulsifying drug delivery system (SNEDDS) formulation can increase the solubility in water. The purpose this study was to determine effect surfactant combination on kencur SNEDDS system. formulations were carried out by selecting ratio Tween 80:Span 80 and 80:Chremophor RH 40, followed mixtures polyethylene glycol 400 as co-surfactant, virgin coconut oil phase. clarity, transmittance, emulsification time, particle size, polydispersity index evaluated. stability test aquadest, artificial gastric fluid, intestinal fluid for 4 hours at 37°C. results showed that 80: Chremophor 40 produced better than 80. surfactant-cosurfactant 40:PEG 3:1 1:1 could produce homogenous dispersed showing droplet size 23,0 21,8 nm; transmittance 95.63% 93.83%, preconcentrate emulsified less 35 seconds. single 80:PEG combined with 16.3 nm, 97.85%, 45 smaller aquadest.
